Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

Dry mouth often describes a condition where saliva gland function is compromised or is no longer working properly.

Dry mouth may be caused by many things. Some causes are obvious like diabetes, parkinson’s disease, smoking or cancer therapies such as radiation and chemotherapy in which salivary glands no longer function properly. Did you know more than1,800 medications, both prescription and over-the-counter can cause dry mouth? Other common, but often overlooked causes include stress, aging, or autoimmune disorders such as Sjogrens syndrome.

A neutral pH is the best environment for good oral health. Most people with dry mouth have an acidic pH which eats at the enamel of people’s teeth, causes bacteria build up, bad breath, cavities, etc. Using Mighteaflow regularly helps restore pH to a more neutral state and helps provide relief for dry mouth.

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that helps reduce bad bacteria; Xylitol alone does not stimulate saliva flow, cannot restore saliva gland function, and is unable to bring relief to dry mouth. Clinical studies have shown combining the green tea compound, EGCG, with Xylitol is the most effective way to manage dry mouth. This formulation actually promotes increased saliva flow on average by 400%!

The effects of leaving dry mouth untreated can be severe. Dry mouth environments promote increased bacteria which in turn causes germs, bad breath, cavities, gum disease, and even a loss of teeth. Dry mouth, often referred to as desert mouth or cotton mouth, can cause difficulty swallowing, speaking, and can effect one’s sleep.

It’s helpful to first identify the cause of one’s dry mouth. If your dry mouth is directly related to medications, discuss with your doctor possible alternatives. If the cause of the dry mouth cannot be eliminated, the best course of action is to treat the symptom, as there is no dry mouth cure available. Our recommendation is to utilize the MighTeaFlow line of products designed specifically for dry mouth by dental healthcare professionals. Chewing MighTeaFlow sugarless dry mouth gum with the preferred sweetener, Xylitol, is a great way to manage dry mouth throughout the day. Not a gum chewer? Try the MighTeaFlow Orange Crème lozenge which may be chewed or allowed to dissolve on it’s own. (It’s helpful to take a sip of water to help the lozenge dissolve.) After meals, we recommend using the light raspberry flavored MighTeaFlow oral rinse to provide dry mouth relief and loosen food particles. For dry mouth at night, we recommend the MighTeaFlow Oral spray (also light raspberry flavored). It offers the convenience of never having to leave your bed. Just give yourself a few squirts and go back to sleep. No need to get out of bed to find a sink or wake up enough to chew a piece of gum or suck on a lozenge. It is a convenience product for nighttime, as well as those “on the go,” as it easily fits in a pocket or purse. All of these products also address dry tongue, burning tongue, and dry throat issues.

  • Clinical research conducted by dental and other healthcare professionals has proven the patented, clinically tested MighTeaFlow formula with green tea technology increases one’s own saliva by up to 400%. No other product on the market has the double blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial with such significant results.
  • Dr. Stephen Hsu, professor in the Departments of Oral Biology and Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the Dental College of Georgia (formerly Medical College of Georgia), has more than a decade’s worth of research working with green tea polyphenols. The most potent of these, epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), has been discovered to provide a natural, effective approach to dry mouth management. Dr. Hsu’s research has also found EGCG could actually delay disease progression of salivary dysfunction, as well as partially restore salivary gland function through molecular and cellular-based mechanisms in the salivary glands.
  • MighTeaFlow’s pH balanced formulation with the preferred sweetener, Xylitol, is safe for your teeth, unlike the acidic pH found in many other dry mouth remedies, which severely erodes enamel and dentin.

No, these methods may appear to temporarily help, but cannot restore saliva function like Mighteaflow.
